Klanginstallation im öffentlichen Raum im Rahmen der plan 02
Im Vorfeld der plan 02 veranstaltete der Bund Deutscher Architekten/Köln einen Wettbewerb, bei dem eine architektonisch künstlerischer Intervention für den Bereich Hahnenstraße zwischen Neumarkt und Rudolfplatz in Köln gewünscht wurde. Neben vier weiteren Projekten wurde die im Rahmen des Wettbewerbs entwickelte Klanginstallation CARTON als Gemeinschaftsarbeit von Hubert Steins und dem Architektenbüro radius ingenieure vom 20. bis 27 September 2002 während der plan 02 in Köln präsentiert.
CARTON bestand aus insgesamt drei Stationen, an denen jeweils vier voluminöse Röhren an die Überdächer eines Ladenlokals montiert wurden. Im Umfeld jeder Installation befand sich ein Mikrophon, das den Verkehrslärm der Umgebung abnahm und durch Lautsprecher in das Innere der Röhren zuspielte. Auf diese Weise wurde die Eigenresonanz der Hohlkörper hörbar gemacht und die extreme Lärmbelastung der Umgebung maskiert und unterschwellig harmonisiert.

Sound installation for public spaces
In the run up to colognes architecture festival plan 02 the union of German architects (BDA/ section of cologne) advertised a competition for an artificial intervention into a specific area down town cologne. CARTON was one of five awarded proposals planed and released together with the architects of radius Ingenieure in September 2002.
CARTON was composed of three sound installations spread along the sidewalk of a shopping street downtown. Each installation consisted of four big tubes installed in front of a shop with length staged like organ pipes.Each tube carried a speaker at its upper bottom which was fed by the signals of microphones posed on the roof of the shops and picking up the heavy traffic noises of the surrounding. Stimulated by the noises send through the speakers the staged length of the tubes resonated with different timbres.
CARTON was a kind of acoustical mirror which made the passers-by aware of the heavy soundscape but at the same time masking its noises by adding harmonic structure to it as a musical quality.
